Being homeless puts our youth at risk for mental health problems, substance abuse, victimization, criminal activity, unsafe sexual practices, and barriers to education and employment. Our Goal is to help fund those who help prevent our youth from going through this experience through a variety of supports, from homelessness prevention, to transitional housing.
Home Horizon is the charity we will be donating to. They have already made a huge impact helping hundreds of youth in the region of South Georgian Bay.
You can check out their full impact here.
We hope to use Tim's ride from Collingwood to Ohio to bring awareness to youth homelessness and raise some money to support youth who are at risk.
His departure date is set for Sept 28th 2024, with the goal to arrive in Bainsbridge, Ohio by Oct 3rd, and impressive 875km. He will need to keep above an average of 145km per day or about 15km/hr for 10hrs a day.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my teaching career was providing opportunities to disadvantaged students, helping them build confidence, develop their abilities, and gain the resilience needed to succeed in adulthood. Seeing these young people overcome challenges and grow into capable individuals has always been a passion of mine.
I want to extend that support to the broader community by providing additional resources that facilitate programs focused on youth resilience and mental health. By addressing these critical areas, we can empower the next generation to face life's challenges with strength and determination.
While I can't personally reach everyone, I can do my part by taking on a unique challenge. What started as a tongue-in-cheek remark about riding 200 km a day has turned into a serious commitment. Now, I’m putting my words into action to raise funds for Home Horizons by biking and skateboarding down a hill. It’s a small way to contribute to a cause that means so much to me and our community.
Throughout my teaching career, I’ve witnessed firsthand how many teenagers struggle without the support they need during these critical years. While my capacity to provide direct assistance is limited, I am deeply committed to bringing additional resources to our community. Many of these resources are often out of reach for a large portion of our residents, but with your help, we can change that. My goal is to bridge the gap, ensuring that every teen has access to the guidance, tools, and support they need to navigate their teenage years successfully. Together, we can make a lasting impact and provide our youth with the opportunities they deserve.
